Corridors of Power

TUESDAY, MAY 28, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY THE POLITICAL DESK
The reckless talk by a senior official at the Health ministry has caused anxiety among his juniors who want him arrested and charged for hate speech. The man, who has headed several departments at the ministry, was overheard telling his juniors that choices have consequences. The ministry is in the process of merging the two departments of medical services and public health that were previously headed by different ministers. As the merger happens, staff in the previous Public Health ministry whose former minister was Beth Mugo who is allied to TNA are reportedly getting the plum positions while civil servants in the Medical Services ministry headed by Prof Anyang' Nyong'o of ODM are being redeployed to less 'glamourous' positions.

Word doing the rounds is that the heads of the procurement chief in the Deputy President's office and other senior officers are on the chopping block for allegedly allowing the 'leak' of the information relating to the hire of the 'hustler' jet which was used in the recent trip toCentral and West African countries.

Probably out of force of habit, Kibisu Kabatesi is still referring to himself as the deputy prime minister Musalia Mudavadi's spokesman. However, when he realized the anomaly, Kibisu was quick to correct this and re-sent the press release with his proper title— Private and Press Secretary to Musalia Mudavadi, former Deputy Prime Minister.

It was either a fiasco of major proportions or a subtle delivery of a telling message. During the AU's 50th anniversary celebrations, invited European leaders had to make their speeches to a near empty hall. When French President Francois Hollande and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, rose to deliver their speeches, they were greeted by empty chairs. Only a few dozen people—majority of them journalists—were presented when dignitaries like Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller rose to speak. US Secretary of State John Kerry cancelled his speech altogether!
