Corridors of Power

Members of Parliament have come to rue their decision to support the ejection of journalists from the Media Centre in Parliament where they used to hold their press conferences. Last Wednesday, about 35 URP MPs had to hire a venue at the Intercontinental hotel so that they could hold their press conference. The MPs were overheard grumbling how the decision to eject the journalists from the centre had made it difficult for them to access the media. Some of the veteran MPs made unflattering comparisons about the performance of the current Speaker Justin Muturi and his predecessor Kenneth Marende.

A senior official at the Law courts who has developed a penchant of calling judges on their phones and summoning them to his office regardless of protocol was shocked when one of them refused to respond to the summons. A few days ago, the officer was at it again but the judge he called refused to go to his office and told him in no uncertain terms and within the hearing of other staff that the official should come to his chamber and not the other way round! The judge promptly hanged up and continued with his work.

Jubilee's candidate in the Makueni by-election held yesterday,Philip Kaloki, had a rough time to 'sell' himself to an electorate that voted almost unanimously for the late Mutula Kilonzo who was sponsored by Cord. Kaloki had to deal with the corruption of his name to "Kariuki" and its implications that he had 'betrayed' the Kamba community. Jubilee's successful challenge to Kethi Mutula's nomination did not endear Kaloki to the electorate and its attempt to throw more hurdles in her brother Mutula Kilonzo Junior's path made the situation even more difficult for Kaloki/Kariuki.

With TNA leadership wrangles and financial woes deepening every day, a top official at the Office of the President has taken charge in the the day to day operations if the party whose staff have been sent on leave pending a reorganization. Our moles tell us the civil servant is responsible for frustrating an audit of the party finances which has been requested to establish how the millions of shillings allocated to the party by various backers was spent during the last general elections.
