IEBC Tables Controversial Election Results

IEBC Tables Controversial Election Results

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has tabled the controversial March 4th, 2013 election results to the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs.
The IEBC led by its chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan tabled the election results before the departmental committee on Legal Affairs close to five months after the highly contested elections.
The election results were tabled amid drama after the IEBC commissioners declined to take an oath as requested by Members of Parliament forming the committee.
The electoral commissioners stormed out of the committee saying that they should not be coerced to take an oath.
Upon receiving the results, the House Committee adjourned its meeting with the IEBC until Tuesday next week to allow its members to scrutinize the huge volume of results presented by the IEBC.
The March 4th election results are expected to elicit mixed reactions following the dispute on whether President Uhuru Kenyatta realized the minimum 50% plus one vote threshold to ascend to the presidency.
Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto won the election by garnering over six million votes.
Kenyatta’s closest challenger former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, however, disputed the results and filed a petition in the Supreme Court.
However, the Supreme Court upheld the IEBC’s decision allowing for the swearing in of Kenyatta and Ruto as President and Deputy President respectively.
