Senators allied to Jubilee on Tuesday had a difficult time addressing crowds in Makueni County as pro-Cord supporters shouted them down at two venues as campaigns for the Senate seat entered homestretch.

Tharaka Nithi Senator Kindiki Kithure and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen had to cut short their speeches at two venues where the crowds chanted “Wiper! Wiper!” in support of Wiper candidate Mutula Kilonzo jnr.

Green in politics

Prof Kithure and Mr Murkomen made their first stop at Mukuyuni trading centre where they were hosted by former assistant minister Gedion Ndambuki. They were accompanied by former Mutito MP Kiema Kilonzo, who is now the de facto leader of Narc-Kenya.

They were campaigning for the Narc-Kenya candidate, Prof Philip Kaloki.

Prof Kithure, who is the leader of the Majority in Senate, asked the residents not to elect the son of former Senator Mutula Kilonzo, arguing that he was too green in politics.

“Prof Kaloki brought himself to the people and asked for their support. He was neither picked nor forced by some people to campaign against his will like some of his opponents. That’s why we are asking you to support his bid to become the senator,” said Prof Kithure.

But the people kept shouting “Wiper! Wiper!” The leaders were forced to end the meeting and head to Nziu, where they received a similar reception.

Prof Kaloki was not part of the team.

Meanwhile, Mr Kilonzo jnr took his campaign to Kilome, Kibwezi and Nunguni.

He was accompanied by Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana and former Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka, among other Wiper officials.
Labour candidate Jane Kitundu was campaigning in Nunguni, Mukuyuni and Wote town.

Mr Harun Mwau of the People’s Independent Candidates of Kenya has maintained a low-key vote hunt. Only his campaign vehicles could be seen criss-crossing the county.

Independent candidate Urbanus Katumo was not in the campaign trail on Tuesday. He spent the day at the offices of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries (IEBC) offices in Nairobi.

Today is the last day for the contestants in the by-election to conduct their campaigns. And the electoral agency has rejected a petition challenging Mr Kilonzo jnr’s nomination to contest.
