Luhya consider Marende for their political kingpin

Tuesday, July 9, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY JOHN NALIANYA
Former speaker Kenneth Marende has been lined up to be the Luhya political kingpin in new talks by community leaders. Speaking during a thanksgiving mass for the former Kanduyi MP Alfred Khag’ati at the weekend, a host of Luhya leaders said they had already met and agreed to unify the community early enough for the next elections.
This comes after former deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi and former Minister Eugene Wamalwa failed to be appointed in the government.
Lugari MP was the first to break the news when he ruled out supporting Raila Odinga in 2017 saying even if the community supported him again he will never be the president.
Jirongo said both elected leaders and those who lost several seats had already convened a series of meetings to work out the modalities of the outfit.
“We want to assure you that we had several successful meetings with all your leaders and this time around we don’t want to be taken for a ride by other people,”Jirongo said.
He said the unity talks bring together both members of the Jubilee and Cord alliance to spearhead the community’s interests under the stewardship of former house speaker Kenneth Marende.
Jirongo said for the first time in the history of the country, the community had no single leader in government even after the Amani coalition decided to join hands with Jubilee team.
“You can see for yourself what the digital government has done to our brothers like Eugene who supported them. Cord is no better because in the nominations, they neglected our community and hence the need to go our way,” he said.
Former Bumula MP Wakoli Bifwoli said the journey they had started was unstoppable and warned luhya leaders opposed to it of being isolated from the community.
Host Alfred Khanga’ti said the Luhya community got a raw deal in both coalitions and urged the community to come together to make a political bloc. “You can never be respected if you have no numbers and that’s why the community is in oblivion,” he said.
Others who attended the meeting and shared the same sentiments included Kakamega Governor Wyclife Oparanya, Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama, ODM youth leaders Rashid Mohamed and Ben Ombima.
