The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has received 304,000 ballot papers for the Makueni senate by-elections from a UK printer.
IEBC Chief Executive Officer James Oswago confirmed that the ballot materials arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 10am on Thursday from the London printer and have been ferried to a secret location within the city.
“We have deployed 150 Constituency Coordinators to lead the process of sticking the additional information so as to include the details of the fifth candidate Mutula Kilonzo Jnr,” Mr Oswago said.
He said though the work is a logistical nightmare the commission has dispatched its entire staff at the Anniversary Towers to conduct the sticking as directed by the supplier.
The work is currently underway under tight security to ensure a smooth operation.
According to the IEBC boss, the stickers containing Mr Kilonzo Jnr's details have been manufactured to the specifications that meet the constitutional requirement
The ballot papers are packed according to classifications that had been sent to the suppliers in advance to ensure ease of delivery.
Mr Oswago said that the delivery of the package from the city is expected after 3pm.
“We have hired two choppers but we will use one to transport the materials straight to the six constituencies from where they would be dispatched to the over 900 polling centres,” he said.
He said the commission has one chopper on standby to deal with any eventuality.
