Kwanza, Trans Nzoia County: A primary school in Kwanza district has been closed down for a few days following the unrest experienced among parents and pupils after one of the pupils died while undertaking a punishment Wednesday morning.
Meteitei primary school that is situated in Kwanza division was closed for a morning session after parents staged a peaceful demonstration to following the death of the pupil Peter Wanyama.
Area district officer Millicent Ramaita confirmed to West FM that the pupil died after he was fell on by a wall of an old water tank that they had been told by the head teacher to demolish as a punishment together with other pupils.
However no other pupil was reported to be injured in the incident as the late Wanyama who is believed to have remained inside the tank when all the rest had moved out to push the wall inside, died instantly after it fell on him.
"It is not clear as to how the pupil remained inside the wall when all the rest shouted to each other to come out before they push the final bit of the wall inside bearing in mind that the pupils are not experts in demolishing buildings," the D.O said.
The administrator however revealed that investigations are being carried by police to establish as to how the deceased was left alone inside when others left.
During the demonstration the administrators and education officials managed to talk to the irate parents who had refused to let the body be taken to Kitale district hospital mortuary and eventually they yielded to release the body that was lying at the Center Kwanza dispensary.
Ramaita said on her mobile phone that police had visited the scene and the head teacher taken to record a statement over the incident.
The school shall therefore resume on Monday with a stakeholders meeting to address the matter before normal learning resumes.
The body of the deceased is at the Kitale district hospital mortuary as investigations are being undertaken by police.
