TNA staff suspended

Wednesday, July 24, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY OLIVER MATHENGE AND FRANCIS MUREITHI
THE National Alliance has suspended some of its staff at its headquarters in Nairobi as leadership wrangles and financial woes deepened inside President Uhuru Kenyatta's party.
TNA Secretary General Onyango Oloo called some workers at the TNA headquarters along Jogoo Road over the weekend and asked them not to report to work till further notice.
The party leadership reportedly cited the party's financial status as one reason why about 50 staff have been asked not to report to work.
“They have not been paid for the last three months and you know finances are still a problem. So instead of keeping them here, we have told them to take a break until things are back to normal,” said a TNA official who did not want to be named.
He said the party is still grappling with the disappearance of between Sh52 million and Sh100 million from its accounts.
“We hope the ongoing audit will tell us the truth. These are among the issues which are making many operations of the party to be suspended,” said the official.
TNA Director of Communication Machel Waikenda told the Star that the staff who were asked to leave were volunteers whose services were no longer required for the day to day running of the party.
"Our staff was bloated after the general elections because we had a sizable number of volunteers," Waikenda said.
Waikenda maintained that all TNA employees on contract are still at work and had only stepped out for training but will be back in the office tomorrow.
He said that the party was in the process of restructuring to create long-term systems and abolish structures created just for the 2013 election. He said that the party will soon embark on nationwide recruitment.
TNA has been rocked by wrangles between a faction led by its chairman and nominated MP Johnson Sakaja and a faction led by vice chair Lydia Mokaya.
The Mokaya faction has written to the Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u saying that Sakaja is no longer the party chairman.
But Sakaja has insisted he remains TNA chairman. He has accused some individuals of wanting to grab the money that will be released by the Registrar of Political Parties.
