NAIROBI, KENYA: A son to former minister Raphael Tuju has been questioned over the death ofTony Ogunda, the former police officer at the centre of a lover triangle with his mother.
Police visited the offices of the Mr Mano Tuju, 26 who is a pilot in Nairobi and took his statements at the weekend as part of investigations into the death of Ogunda.
This was because other witnesses who have recorded statements said he had been drinking with deceased and other friends in the past weeks before the incident happened.
“Mano explained his side of the story and their meetings and we will analyse the statements later,” said an officer aware of the probe.
Mano happens to have been drinking with the deceased and other friends days before Ogunda, 24 was found dead in their house last Tuesday morning.
So far police have recorded statements from at least 10 people including Tuju’s wife Ruth Akinyi.
Police said Tuju who arrived back to the country from South Africa on Friday is expected to also record his statement this week.
“Not that he is a suspect but as part of the normal investigations. His statements can be good,” said another officer who asked not to be named.
A nephew to former minister Raphael Tuju, Cosmas Okoth who was with Ogunda before he died was Friday presented before court.
But police did not prefer murder charge against him saying the investigations were still incomplete.
They asked for seven days to complete investigations, which would determine whether or not to charge him.
Akinyi mentioned the name of a woman only identified as Sabina, who insiders said was a lover to Ogunda and asked that she be grilled.
Okoth too has mentioned her name claiming she is carrying Ogunda’s pregnancy.
But Ogunda’s friends denied the claims that the said female friend was pregnant and she could be the cause of the death.
George Otieno, a close friend of Ogunda said he knew the said woman adding she was not pregnant.
“The woman is not pregnant. We were together last week on Wednesday with Tony and I am not aware they had differences or she was pregnant. Those are lies,” said Otieno.
He added the woman had been a close friend to Ogunda but could not reveal if they were lovers.
“Of course Tony loved women like any other man but none should say at this stage she was the cause of the death. Tony was murdered,” said Otieno.
Akinyi left Kilimani police station after recording her statement for four hours on Thursday and head of CID George Ojuka said she may be recalled to record more statements depending how the investigations go.
Nairobi County police commander Benson Kibui and his CID counterpart Nicholas Kamwende said they hope to conclude the case by end of the week.
