Bringing together all communities in the country after the divisive March 4 elections remains the biggest obstacle for the government, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said.
During a meeting where he hosted Muslim leaders for breaking of the fast at State House, President Kenyatta said uniting the country would be his greatest achievement.
“We started this journey during the campaigns and even if we would not have won, we would still be on the journey to uniting Kenyans. This is a bigger goal than political office,” said the Head of State who is marking 100 days in office.
recent opinion poll by Ipsos Synovateindicated that the President enjoys 51 per cent popularity rating, which is slightly more than 50.7 per cent of votes he received in the General Election.
This means he is yet to win over constituencies that voted for his opponents.
On Saturday evening, the President reached out to the Muslim community by hosting a first ever meeting with its leaders in the month of Ramadhan.
Last Friday, the President also hosted a meeting of women leaders from across the political divide, with unity being the central theme.
“If we work together the way I envisage we will, then development, unity, security and progress will not only benefit those of us in government but would be for the benefit of all Kenyans,” he said.
Deputy President William Ruto said the meeting with the Muslim leaders was an opportunity to break barriers to unity.
“We will endeavour to demolish existing barriers and instead build bridges for the unity of the country,” he said.
He said Kenya would rise beyond race, religion and tribal divisions for peace and development to be achieved.
